M. Logesh, a student of Municipal Higher Secondary School in Srivilliputtur, knows that his widowed mother is toiling hard to bring up three children.Working in a brick kiln, she has managed to make her daughter a graduate and elder son an electrician with the available wherewithal.Realising that education alone would help his family come up in life, Logesh had put in his maximum efforts. He secured good marks that could fetch him an engineering seat in Government college. However, he had set his aim higher. With dreams in him, Logesh grabbed with both hands the opportunity given by Tamil Nadu Government by way of introducing Vibrant Education Targeting Reputed Institution (VETRI) Palligal scheme that gave him weekend coaching to prepare students for facing entrance exams for admission in premier educational institutions like IIT and for NEET.Later, he joined the residential programme, ‘Thisai’, offered by Virudhunagar district administration. The month-long programme saw experienced subject teachers coaching the students in core subjects like Mathemetics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.“Every day, we had classes from 9 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. This was followed by tests in OMR sheets the very next day,” Logesh said. The everyday coaching and training to face exam helped him to prepare well for NEET and JEEE.All his efforts even during the summer vacation fructified as Logesh has got a Chemical Engineering seat in the prestigious IIT Madras.“With the help of Collector and our teachers with such programmes, I could have not got the required coaching to crack the exam. I am awaiting my NEET results. But, now I have set my eyes on IIT Madras,” said a proud Logesh. Two other students, R. Arumugavelan Raghavan and I. Dharaniya, who had studied in Government higher secondary school in Nallamanaickenpatti near Rajapalayam too have benefited from the ‘Thisai’ residential programme.Dharaniya has secured a seat in Food Technology in NIT, Haryana.A daughter of a construction worker, Dharaniya said that the 15-day residential camp was all that helped her get into NIT.Along with the residential camp, Raghavan, son of a daily wage earner had undergone weekly coaching under Vetri Padigal scheme.A boy with locomotor disability attributes his success to the Government programmes to get him a seat in Food Security and Development at NIT, Hyderabad.District Collector N.O.
