French bank Crédit Agricole has apologised to customers and reassured them that no systems were affected after bizarre notification was sent out on Tuesday.

An unexpected notification on the app of French banking giant Crédit Agricole was sent to thousands of customers on Tuesday afternoon.

It prompted thousands of people to try and log on to the service on their mobile phones at the same time – causing the app to crash. The website went down at around the same time as customers tried to log in.

The cause: a mysterious message reading merely ‘Test Cedric’.

It turned out that an, “internal test notification was mistakenly sent to all customers of the Ma Banque app”, the bank told Le Parisien. The volume of people logging on meant the app recorded an unusually high volume of traffic and shut down.
