A large wildfire was burning through a pine forest near Loutraki in southern Greece Monday afternoon, authorities said, with water-bombing aircraft joining ground forces in efforts to extinguish the flames.
The Fire Service said five planes and a helicopter were flying sorties to assist 56 firefighters with 17 fire engines, as well as volunteers fighting the blaze near Corinth, southwest of Athens.
There were no immediate reports of damage to buildings in the area, while there weren’t any strong winds blowing to spread the flames fast.
Earlier, the Fire Service reported 64 wildfires nationwide over the previous 48 hours, with the majority attributed to negligence. Most blazes were contained before they could threaten inhabited areas.
