Acting Secretary General of Bulgaria’s Interior Ministry Georgi Kandev has announced that he is leaving his post, revealing the decision in a statement published on his personal Facebook profile.

Kandev indicated that his departure was driven by a conflict between his professional responsibilities and his personal convictions. “Choosing between my position and my principles is impossible. Promising actions when I have to remain silent is also impossible. I understood the message,” he wrote.

In a lengthy statement reflecting on his three decades of service, Kandev said he had always viewed the role of a police officer as one of responsibility and public service rather than convenience. “For 30 years I have worn the uniform with the awareness that the law is the backbone of the state, that the task of a police officer is not to be convenient, but to be useful,” he stated, adding that he could not become “the person who will simply stare fearfully into the cameras.”

The outgoing official stressed that throughout his career he had sought to uncover the truth, take responsibility, and make difficult decisions when necessary. According to Kandev, both he and his colleagues demonstrated those qualities during the period leading up to the elections, when law enforcement agencies were heavily involved in efforts to combat vote buying and election-related offenses.
