The Environment and Energy Ministry said Monday it has accepted the resignation of its top urban planning official, as authorities investigate an alleged corruption ring involving municipal planning services.
Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou accepted the resignation of Efthymios Bakoyannis, secretary-general for spatial planning and the urban environment, according to a ministry statement.
In his resignation letter, Bakoyannis cited personal reasons and said he was closing an important chapter of his long tenure at the ministry. He said he plans to return to his academic duties but remains available to assist with a smooth transition and ensure continuity in the work of the secretariat.
His departure comes days after the death of former deputy environment minister Nikos Tagaras.
The resignation also comes amid heightened scrutiny following revelations of an alleged corruption network operating within municipal planning offices. Police have arrested six people following coordinated raids by the Internal Affairs Division.
