A senior official at the Ministry of Culture tendered his resignation on Thursday, just days after a colleague at the Environment Ministry also stepped down, amid speculation of ties to an ongoing investigation into corruption at city zoning offices.

According to sources, Giorgos Didaskalou, a civil engineer, is among several “long-serving” general secretaries at the Culture and other ministries who have been asked to resign by the political leadership, “because they have come to the end of their cycle.”

His resignation, however, comes soon after that of Efthymios Bakoyannis from the post of secretary-general for spatial planning and the urban environment at the Environment Ministry.

Bakoyannis stepped down on Monday after two close relatives were among six suspects arrested last week in an operation cracking down on an alleged corruption network operating within municipal planning offices in Attica.

Investigators spearheading the operation say the network charged up to €30,000 to fix zoning violations and block inspections.
