A grove of 50 young lemon trees has been planted in the capital’s central district of Koukaki to mark Friday’s United Nations-designated World Environment Day, the City of Athens said.
A municipal statement said the trees will grow on a 2,500-square-meter plot at 128-130 Kallirois Avenue southwest of the Hill of Philopappos, that’s intended to “environmentally upgrade the area and boost biodiversity.”
The city’s deputy mayor for the environment and greenery, Giorgos Apostolopoulos, was quoted as saying municipal authorities have planted more than 12,000 new trees over the past two and a half years. He pledged that another 50 trees will soon be planted at the Evelpidon Park, a neglected open space behind the city’s main courts complex.
The municipal announcement also said that authorities are planning a pilot project on Momferatou Street in the adjacent Gyzi district, where lemon stock will be grafted onto 15 of the city’s trademark bitter orange trees.
