As many as 15,000 saplings were planted across the University of Madras’ Taramani campus on World Environment Day, as part of a large-scale urban afforestation drive undertaken by a consortium of civic organisations, educational institutions, volunteers, and government agencies. The initiative, held in association with the Green Tamil Nadu Mission, aims at increasing Chennai’s green cover. Hundreds of volunteers, including students and environmental advocates, took part in the event. Environment Minister V.K. Rajeev stressed the need to reduce the use of single-use plastics and adopt sustainable practices, alongside efforts to expand urban green spaces. Organisers said the plantation drive is expected to contribute to climate resilience and ecological conservation in the city. Published - June 05, 2026 11:58 pm IST
