Marking World Environment Day, Sadhguru’s Cauvery Calling movement on June 4 launched its annual plantation drive across Tamil Nadu, setting a target of planting 1.2 crore saplings during 2026-27. The campaign was inaugurated simultaneously at over 140 locations across the State.The movement facilitated the planting of 13.4 crore trees so far and supported nearly 2.6 lakh farmers in adopting tree-based agriculture income, according to a release. For the current year, Coimbatore district has been assigned a target of 8 lakh saplings, while Tiruppur district has been allotted 2.75 lakh saplings. The district-level launch events were held at the Adiyogi premises, Pollachi and Mettupalayam.At the Adiyogi event, Kavundampalayam MLA Kanimozhi Santhosh, Vellingiri Farmer Producer Company director Kittusamy and Palamalai Farmer Producer Company director Vijayakumar inaugurated the plantation drive. At Pollachi, former MLA M. Shanmugam, Pollachi Chamber of Commerce president A. Muthusamy and Mariamman Farmer Producer Company director A. Balu launched the district campaign by planting saplings.As part of the campaign, over 1 lakh saplings were planted on farmlands across 317 acres, marking the beginning of tree-based agriculture initiatives in different districts. MLAs, district officials and other dignitaries participated in the district-level programmes. The plantation drive is aligned with this year’s World Environment Day theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.”Under the tree-based agriculture model, commercially valuable timber species are cultivated alongside conventional crops to improve soil fertility, water retention, biodiversity and farm income. Farmers are given subsidised saplings of teak, red sandalwood, sandalwood, vengai, malai vembu, mahogany and rosewood, besides crops such as pepper, avocado and nutmeg suitable for the plains.
