The planet sends signals when it is in distress that come in the form of excessive heatwaves, torrential rains, raging wildfires and melting glaciers. But even in a world where deforestation, environmental degradation and unchecked urbanisation are rampant, stories of ecological restoration often inspire hope and optimism. On the occasion of World Environment Day, June 5, one such remarkable story of 44-year-old Sadashiva Hydra has come to the spotlight. A resident of Honna Kiranagi village in Kalaburagi district of North Karnataka, he is an unsung hero who gave a new lease of life to the villagers. Barren wasteland to green hopeAs per a report by The Better India, Honna Kiranagi was known for its unbearable temperatures in the hot summer season. For years, the ground here was so hot that when the villagers walked on the land, their feet burned, leaving blisters. A power plant project that never saw the light of day led to the clearance of 1600 acres of land, leaving behind a vast stretch of barren land, prone to drought, extreme heat, and failing agriculture. With barely any jobs left, many labourers left the village in the summer to work as construction labourers in metro cities like Bengaluru. But Sadashiva Hydra, an MGNREGA advocate and grassroots organiser, refused to accept this fate. Sadashiva Hydra was once a man who earned only Rs 125 a month for a living, lost his father at a young age and was drowning in gambling and substance abuse until he found the true purpose of his life. Sadashiva asked 1 simple question, ‘ Why suffer in the city when we can transform our own village?’ and that question changed everything. Initially, people were skeptical, but in 2015, Sadashiva, along with over 1000 residents, took the initiative of environmental restoration into their own hands, reported the Deccan Herald. They planted 1 lakh trees, but the harsh climate resulted in 20,000 saplings drying out. Sadashiva Hydra, however, did not give up. He and the villagers dug deep trenches stretching across 18 kilometres, carried water in the intense summer temperatures and continued to plant saplings one by one, year after year. Sadashiva’s efforts finally bore fruit and at present, Honna Kiranagi village has embraced 65,000 trees, standing over 40 feet tall, making the entire village 3 degrees cooler than before. Sadashiva Hydra further mobilised the villagers, helping them secure identity documents, apply for job cards, and understand how to demand work legally, as per the Deccan Herald. As wages began to reach households regularly, migration slowly reduced. Now, 1050 villagers have jobs, women run businesses and children study in school. The land, which was once abandoned, now reverberates with life and laughter.
