Emphasising the importance of environmental conservation, Valmiki University Registrar Channappa said environmental prosperity is essential for ensuring a healthy life and called upon people to protect nature for future generations. He was speaking at the World Environment Day programme organised at Valmiki University on Friday, where saplings provided by the Forest Department were planted on the university campus.Mr. Channappa said, “World Environment Day has evolved beyond being a symbolic annual observance and has emerged as a major global platform for creating public awareness on environmental issues. He noted that the existence of every living being on Earth depends on the environment, as humans, animals and birds rely on nature for food, air, water and other basic necessities.”However, he expressed concern that rapid urbanisation and human greed were leading to the destruction of natural resources, often without people realising the long-term consequences. As a result, the air people breathe, the water they drink and the soil used for agriculture are increasingly becoming polluted, he said.Stressing that preventing such environmental degradation is the primary objective of World Environment Day, Mr. Channappa urged people to stop activities that harm nature and instead focus on nurturing trees and green spaces. He said a greener environment would help ensure a healthier and more sustainable future. The programme was attended by Deputy Registrar Venkatesh K., Deans Parvathi C.S. and Latha M.S., NSS Coordinator G.S. Biradar, Pampapati, Prakash, teaching and non-teaching staff, officials of the Raichur Forest Department, and students. Published - June 06, 2026 07:18 pm IST
