Authorities in Ruse have uncovered a large-scale drug trafficking operation after seizing approximately 400 kilograms of marijuana during an inspection at the Danube Bridge border crossing. Investigators estimate the value of the narcotics at around 4 million euros.
The drugs were discovered concealed in a specially constructed compartment inside a truck. Officers found the shipment packed in 80 separate boxes hidden within the vehicle.
The investigation led to the arrest of six people believed to be involved in the smuggling network. Those detained include five Bulgarian citizens from Montana, Pleven, Petrich, and Pernik, as well as a citizen of Honduras.
According to investigators, the group was operating a cross-border criminal scheme that combined migrant smuggling with drug trafficking. The suspects allegedly transported migrants from Bulgaria to Spain and used return trips to move marijuana back across Europe.
Authorities say the network had been active since 2025 and is believed to have completed six similar operations during that period. Part of the seized marijuana was reportedly intended for the Turkish market.
