The former wife of a Polish university professor who was murdered in Athens in July last year was found dead Thursday night inside Korydallos Prison, authorities said.

Preliminary findings indicate the 43-year-old died by suicide, allegedly using bedsheets in the bathroom of her cell, according to officials.

She had been held in pretrial detention on charges of moral complicity in the killing of her ex-husband, who was shot dead in the northern suburb of Agia Paraskevi. She had denied any involvement in the case.

Her partner, who confessed to the shooting, was convicted as the gunman. Two Albanian nationals and one Bulgarian national were also convicted as accomplices.
