The identity of a woman whose body was found inside a suitcase in an abandoned building in central Athens was made public on Thursday, as police investigators continue to trace her final movements in the country.
The 38-year-old Scottish national has been named as Elisabeth Jane Ross. Her identity was confirmed through Interpol after Greek authorities matched her fingerprints with biometric records held by US authorities, where she had previously worked.
Police said Ross arrived in Greece from Edinburgh on June 26 and initially stayed with Greek friends in the port district of Keratsini before telling them on July 15 that she planned to move to the home of American friends in the Kypseli neighborhood of downtown Athens. She was not seen again.
Investigators have obtained phone records after learning that someone had continued using Ross’ mobile phone and allegedly sent messages to her father while posing as her to prevent her family from reporting her missing, according to ERT.
Her body was discovered inside a suitcase on July 18 by a homeless man, who alerted authorities after noticing a strong odor. An autopsy has not determined the exact cause of death because of advanced decomposition, and toxicology and laboratory tests are pending.
