Authorities have identified the body of a woman found inside a suitcase in an abandoned building in the central Athens district of Kypseli on July 18 as a 38-year-old British national, police said.
The woman was born in Scotland in February 1988, according to authorities. She is believed to have arrived in Greece on June 29 after flying via Cyprus from the United States. Investigators are examining whether she had been working in the country. Her name has not been released.
Her identity was confirmed following cooperation between Greek and US authorities. Initial checks against available databases failed to identify her, prompting Greek authorities to send her fingerprints through Interpol to law enforcement agencies abroad. US authorities ultimately provided information that led to her identification.
The British Embassy in Greece has been notified, as has the woman’s father. Police are seeking to contact him as part of efforts to gather information about her recent movements and contacts.
Investigators are now focusing on reconstructing the woman’s movements after her arrival in Greece, including where she stayed, whether she traveled with another person and who she may have met before her death.
