An American woman who tried fish and chips for the first time ever has issued her verdict on the iconic dish - and there was one part she considered 'way better' than US food06:32, 05 Jun 2026Fish and chips is one of the UK's most beloved national dishes. As a nation, we love nothing more than heading down one of an estimated 10,000 chippies operating across the country and tucking into a collective 382 million portions of fish and chips every single year - and it's a dish that we love recommending to anyone visiting the country for the first time.Today (June 5th) is actually National Fish and Chip day, so if there was ever a time to enjoy the iconic dish, today is the day. One American woman on social media recently tried fish and chips for the first time ever after hearing so many good things about it - and she even ended up declaring that one part of it was "way better" than what she was used to back home.Kalani Smith is an American man living in the UK, who regularly shares videos on TikTok of himself trying and rating British foods. Recently, he has had a woman named Dixie come to the UK to visit him, and has been taking her to try all the foods he has fallen in love with since moving here - including fish and chips. The man took Dixie to the Jolly Cricketers pub in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, to try their traditional fish and chips, as it came highly recommended. They both ordered the dish, which is only served on Mondays and Tuesdays, and were eager to tuck in as soon as it arrived. However, Dixie made a few unfortunate blunders as soon as the food was placed in front of her. First, she referred to the dish as "fish and fries", which caused Kalani to exclaim that they were chips and not fries. She also hilariously said she "forgot to order ranch" as a condiment for her meal - not knowing that we Brits don't tend to have ranch on offer anyway.Content cannot be displayed without consentKalani then did the honours of showing Dixie how to properly add salt and vinegar to her dinner, and once that was done, Dixie could finally sample her food - and was immediately blown away by one detail. She said: "That's good. That is so good. I love that this batter is not as heavy as our fried fish at home would be."The dish also came with tartar sauce and mushy peas, both of which Dixie also said she enjoyed, noting that the tartar sauce didn't look like the sauce she was used to, but did taste the way she was expecting it to.Kalani noted that the tartar sauce was clearly homemade rather than coming from a jar, which helped to give it a deeper flavour. They both said they enjoyed the mushy peas, and before long, their plates were clear. At the end of the video, Dixie declared that the meal was the "best fried fish" she had ever eaten.Commenters on the video were quick to joke that it seemed Kalani was "running out of patience" with Dixie, as she kept making stereotypical American comments like referring to the chips as fries and asking for ranch dressing. Others said they were jealous as the fish and chips looked delicious.Article continues belowOne person said: "That's the perfect response to someone calling it Fish & Fries."Another joked: "I think Kalani is running out of patience."But a third stood up for Dixie, stating: "Gotta say I'm not impressed with how impatient you are with her, sir!!! Remember you were there once!"
