Tension erupted in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Thursday when an armed security convoy escorting a bullion van attempted to drive through protesters demanding the rescue of abducted schoolchildren and teachers, forcing angry demonstrators to confront the security operatives and compel the vehicle to change course.
A video of the incident obtained by SaharaReporters showed dozens of protesters surrounding the lead security vehicle accompanying the bullion van, chanting and ordering the convoy to turn back.
Moments later, the bullion van was seen reversing course and diverting to an alternative route, with the armed escort vehicle following behind amid cheers from protesters.
Some of the demonstrators accused the government and security agencies of prioritising the protection of cash and the interests of the wealthy while failing to safeguard vulnerable citizens facing kidnapping and insecurity.
