Residents in Westridge say they continue to live in fear as complaints about an alleged illegal tavern in Cypress Way persist despite enforcement action.
Residents in Westridge, Mitchell’s Plain, say they are losing faith in authorities after alleging that an illegal tavern at the centre of years of complaints resumed operating within days of a recent liquor seizure.
The latest developments come weeks after multiple reports on long-standing community concerns about an alleged illegal shebeen operating from a residential property in Cypress Way, and claims that residents have been living in fear and are too scared to openly speak out due to concerns about possible retaliation.
Now, residents say they are escalating their pleas beyond local authorities and are calling for intervention from police oversight bodies and the government.
In emails sent on May 24 and May 25, community members wrote to the SAPS, oversight bodies, councillors, provincial government officials, and media houses claiming that police conducted an operation at the premises and confiscated liquor.
