SAPS conducted a raid at a suspected illegal tavern in Westridge.

Alleging a pattern of negligence in handling what they describe as a persistent problem: an illegal tavern that recently resumed operations after a brief shutdown following a liquor seizure, residents in Westridge, Mitchell’s Plain, say they are losing faith in authorities.

In emails sent on May 24 and May 25, community members wrote to the SAPS, oversight bodies, councillors, provincial government officials, and media houses, claiming that police conducted an operation at the premises and confiscated liquor.

However, residents allege that by the following day, alcohol was being delivered to the property once again.

"Police came last night and seized illegal liquor being sold. This afternoon, the illegal shebeen is being refilled with liquor," one resident said.
