Nine youths have been arrested over a violent attack in a park east of Athens in which two teenagers were injured and a pair of shoes stolen, authorities said Wednesday.

A police statement said all nine suspects were found inside a vehicle last week, shortly after the pre-dawn attack in Peania. All were aged 17-20.

The statement said the suspects were part of a larger group that came up to several youths in the park and attacked an 18-year-old with a baseball bat, injuring him in the head. A 16-year-old was also beaten up and his shoes were stolen.

The motive for the attack was not clear.

Police said the suspects face charges including grievous bodily harm, violence against vulnerable people and robbery.
