After a long break, Thoothukudi Corporation resumed anti-encroachment operation on Wednesday following hundreds of complaints from the public.Most of the busy roads of this port town have been narrowed down by encroachers, who have occupied the pedestrian space and roads with their permanent and temporary structures, and consequently hundreds of complaints are made by the publicEven after Mayor Jegan Periyasamy had issued several warnings in the past against the encroachers, illegal structures continue to crop up along the roads and the streets in the form of commercial banners and boards, car sheds, ramps etc. leaving the road-users in trouble.After the irked public have started dashing off complaints to the Corporation, the anti-encroachment drive, which was once organised on Wednesdays, resumed again with the police giving protection to the personnel of the urban civic body.When the drive was conducted along the Bryant Nagar main road on Wednesday, 63 illegal structures were removed while a few encroachers removed their illegal structures on their own.“The encroachment eviction drive will continue on Wednesdays across the town. Hence, the public, who have knowledge about encroachments in their areas may alert the Corporation officials,” the officials said. Published - June 03, 2026 08:16 pm IST
