The Erode Corporation and the State Highways Department on Saturday (June 13, 2026) continued their drive to remove roadside encroachments in various parts of the city to ease traffic congestion. The drive, which began three days ago, initially covered the stretch between Panneerselvam Park and Manikoondu, where encroachments on both sides of the road were removed. It was later extended to Meenakshi Sundaranar Road.On Saturday, officials cleared encroachments along the road connecting Panneerselvam Park and the railway station. Flex boards, advertisement hoardings and other display boards erected along the roadside were dismantled. A flex board put up by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam near Panneerselvam Park was also removed.During the drive, officials removed an iron name board installed by a trade union opposite the Head Post Office. AIADMK Erode Urban District Secretary K.V. Manoharan objected to the move, stating that the union had not been informed in advance and would have removed the board on its own had prior notice been given. He also urged officials to ensure that all encroachments were removed without discrimination and questioned whether temporary stalls and encroachments that emerge during the weekly textile market in the area would also be cleared. The exchange led to a brief commotion, post which officials resumed the operation. The encroachment removal drive is continuing in the city, officials said. Published - June 13, 2026 05:41 pm IST
