Residents of Sampath Nagar in Erode have urged the authorities to remove encroachments on roads and pedestrian pathways, alleging that roadside shops and vendors have occupied public spaces, causing inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians.According to residents, around 10 to 20 shops along the locality have extended their business activities onto footpaths and road margins, leaving little space for pedestrians. As a result, morning walkers are forced to use the carriageway, raising safety concerns, particularly for senior citizens and children.Residents said the encroachments have narrowed the available road width and affected vehicluar movement. They alleged that vehicles parked by customers further aggravate the problem. The situation worsens during the evening hours when customers gather in large numbers at the shops, residents said. The increased crowding on the roadside often leads to congestion and makes it difficult for local residents to move around the area.Pedestrian pathways meant for public use have been rendered unusable at several locations owing to commercial activity, they added. Residents said repeated requests to keep the pathways clear have yielded little result. They wanted the encroachments on roads and footpaths to be removed and ensure road space if fully utilised by motorists and pedestrians. They also sought regular monitoring to prevent the recurrence of such violations and ensure safe and unobstructed movement for pedestrians and motorists.
