GCC begins removal of encroachments on key stretches in city

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), on Saturday, began removing encroachments on road near crowded places.A large number of police and GCC officials removed encroachments near Egmore Maternity hospital on Pantheon Road.Two bunk shops, a sugar cane juice shop, and three pushcarts were removed from Pantheon Road in Division 61.The remaining four shops are under notice period and instructions have been issued to earmark shops in the vending zone.The four shops have been asked to shift within five days. “If they do not shift within five days, they also will be removed,” GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran said.“Continuous action will be taken, especially against encroachment on footpaths and in non-vending zones,” Dr. Sameeran said.Residents have complained about encroachments, including hospitals, places of worship, and educational institutions, on bus routes in various parts of the city.Public health and food safety issues are also being monitored by civic authorities in all 15 zones of the Chennai Corporation.
