The Health authorities should intensify surveillance and screening against the raging Ebola pandemic. This comes at a time of intense debate on plans to establish an Ebola quarantine facility for US citizens on Kenyan soil that the High Court has temporarily stopped.
The court granted interim orders after a non-governmental organisation, Katiba Institute, sued the State over its decision to establish the US-backed centre at Laikipia Airbase. Judge Patricia Nyaundi blocked the establishment or operation of the facility and barred the entry of Ebola-exposed individuals pending the hearing on June 2.
The temporary ruling against the setting up of the centre for Americans highlights serious public concerns. Filings in court, whose arguments will be weighed in court in the fullness of time, say the Constitution requires that a decision of such a magnitude must be reached after public participation to seek the people’s views.
