MANILA, Philippines — As an elected senator, Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa should be allowed to perform his duties through online participation, Sen. Robin Padilla said on Thursday.

Padilla defended Dela Rosa’s continued absence from the Senate amid an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in connection with the previous administration’s war on drugs.

“Bato is wanted by the ICC; it’s not that he doesn’t want to attend sessions. Those are two very different things. He is avoiding appearing in person because he could be put on a plane, taken to a foreign country, and imprisoned,” Padilla wrote in Filipino on Facebook.
