Borislav Sarafov officially stepped down from his positions as director of the National Investigation Service and deputy prosecutor general, bringing to a close more than a decade at the top levels of Bulgaria’s prosecution system. The Prosecutorial College of the Supreme Judicial Council approved his resignation without debate and reinstated him as an investigator within the National Investigation Service.
The move effectively marks the end of what many in the judiciary have already begun calling the “Sarafov era.” After 13 years in senior prosecutorial leadership and nearly three years serving as acting prosecutor general following the removal of Ivan Geshev, Sarafov announced that he was leaving his management posts after what he described as careful consideration.
In a statement distributed through BTA shortly after submitting his resignation, Sarafov said he understood the public demand for judicial reform and argued that changes in the system should come through professional dialogue rather than “personal attacks and extraordinary legislative initiatives.” He added that he intended to continue working in the judiciary as an ordinary investigator, returning to the role where his magistrate career originally began.
