MANILA, Philippines — Naga City in Camarines Sur province may become the 34th highly urbanized city (HUC) in the country, allowing the local government to be prioritized for flagship projects of the national government, and eventually, to have its own congressional representative.

Mayor Leni Robredo on Wednesday said she received a text message from Malacañang telling her that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signed the proclamation converting Naga from an independent component city to an HUC.

The milestone coincided with the commemoration of the 68th birth anniversary of Robredo’s late husband, former Interior Secretary and longtime Naga City Mayor Jesse Robredo.
