MANILA, Philippines — While the current administration may have missed the chance to implement significant projects, a lawmaker believes President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. can still initiate political and electoral reforms that would help the country have a better future.

One of the things that Marcos can do, Caloocan Rep. Edgar Erice said in his privilege speech during the House of Representatives’ session on Monday, is to require candidates for subsequent elections, including the 2028 polls, to participate in debates.

“It’s good if the President can give us a chance at good government after his term, if he can give us good leaders through the push of electoral reforms […] we suggest that we politicians, all candidates for 2028, we need to submit our sworn platform of government which we will stand by,” Erice said in Filipino.

“And aside from that, so that we could usher in political maturity and raise the standard of awareness of our voters, we should make debates mandatory for all candidates; whoever you are, you should face a debate so the people would know your capabilities,” he added.
