Alabama congressman Shomari Figures may survive to fight another day.

When the U.S. Supreme Court dropped its landmark decision in Louisiana v. Callais on April 29, it looked like open hunting season had begun for Democratic members of Congress representing majority-Black U.S. House districts in the South. Urged on by an eager Trump White House, Republican governors and legislators hastened to halt elections and call special legislative sessions to redraw maps and give the GOP a better chance to maintain control of Congress in November.
