Bulgaria’s Interior Ministry is preparing new regulations that will tighten requirements for fire extinguishers in vehicles and introduce additional checks during annual technical inspections.
Under the proposed changes, passenger cars and light commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tons will be required to carry at least one powder fire extinguisher containing a minimum of 1 kilogram of extinguishing agent. Heavier vehicles, minibuses, and trailers will face stricter standards depending on their size and capacity.
A key new requirement would make valid certification stickers for fire extinguishers mandatory during annual vehicle inspections.
The draft regulations, published by Ministry of Interior of Bulgaria for public consultation, are expected to come into force on January 1 next year.
Drivers are also being reminded that neighboring Greece already enforces stricter road safety rules. Greek authorities can issue fines of 30 euros for missing or incomplete first-aid kits, while additional requirements include carrying fire blankets and maintaining equipment within its expiration date.
