A new commemorative coin series marking the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Crete and the Greek Campaign of 1941 was officially launched in Canberra during a ceremony co-hosted by the Cretan Federation of Australia and New Zealand, The Greek Herald reported.
Issued by the Royal Australian Mint, the collection honors the Greek Campaign and the Battle of Crete fought during April and May 1941, paying tribute to the sacrifice and bravery of ANZAC troops and the people of Crete during World War II.
The event was attended by Greece’s ambassador to Australia, Stavros Venizelos; Cyprus High Commissioner to Australia Antonis Sammoutis; and a delegation from the Hellenic National Defense General Staff led by Konstantinos Bouzos. Also present were Greek Defense Attache Kyriakos Kyriakakos, representatives of the Royal Australian Mint, the Australian War Memorial, and members of the Greek diaspora.
The launch formed part of broader commemorative events in Australia marking the anniversary of the historic battle, which remains a significant chapter in Greek-Australian wartime ties.
