The Coimbatore Corporation has commenced a survey to develop pedestrian walkways along the State Bank Road near Coimbatore railway junction. The proposed project is set to cover a 600-metre stretch between the Collectorate and the Lanka Corner underpass. In addition, a short stretch towards the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital area will also be included to improve pedestrian safety.Corporation officials said the existing footpaths are uneven with inadequate walking space at several locations. Encroachments by shops along the roadside have reduced the pedestrian space, forcing many people to walk on the road even when there is heavy vehicle movement.“There are plans to upgrade the pedestrian facilities along the stretch to address these issues,” a senior Corporation official said. The survey includes assessment of the road width and length as well as the existing stormwater drain network.“We are also studying the number of vehicles and pedestrians using the State Bank Road, Coimbatore Medical College Hospital and railway station stretch every day. Based on the findings, pedestrian walkways will be developed for public use,” the official added. Published - May 24, 2026 07:35 pm IST
