Three pedestrian-friendly pelican signals were opened on the busy stretches of Avinashi Road and Tiruchi Road in Coimbatore on Friday.The new pelican signals are located at Nava India Junction, PSG Tech and Olympus junction.City Police Commissioner N. Kannan inaugurated the signals, which can be operated by pedestrians to safely cross the arterial roads at these three locations.According to the police, the signals were installed with the financial support from PSG Hospitals. Each of these pelican signals have buttons for pedestrians to operate them on both sides of the road. When the button is pressed, the red light will glow for 20 seconds to stop the movement of vehicles and the green light will glow for pedestrians to cross the road. Pedestrians should cross the road during this gap. Once the Pelican signal is operated, it cannot be operated again for 120 seconds.The facility will help pedestrians cross the road easily, besides ensuring their safety and reducing chances of getting hit by speeding vehicles while crossing the road, said a statement issued by police, urging pedestrians to make use of the arrangement.
