Deepfake investment scams using the likenesses of prominent Greek figures are spreading across Facebook, TikTok and Google, raising concerns that major tech platforms are failing to adequately enforce European Union rules on disinformation and online fraud.

One AI-generated video circulating on Facebook in recent weeks falsely showed Greek tennis star Maria Sakkari promoting an investment scheme promising high returns within days. Users who clicked on links attached to the video were redirected to cloned news websites carrying fabricated articles designed to lend credibility to the scam.

Bank of Greece Governor Yannis Stournaras has also been targeted in similar deepfake advertisements promoting fraudulent investments. The videos were investigated by Fast Checker, a Greek anti-disinformation observatory recognized by the country’s telecommunications regulator as a trusted source for identifying illegal online content.
