MADRID, May 22. /TASS/. Implementation of the Power of Siberia 2 trunk gas pipeline project from Russia to China is intended to permanently reshape global natural gas distribution flows, according to an article published by the Spanish newspaper El Pais.
According to the newspaper, by receiving larger volumes of gas from Russia, China will be far less compelled to seek contracts on the global liquefied natural gas market, largely supplied by the United States after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This, in turn, will make it easier for the EU, Japan and India to meet their import needs. As the publication writes, Power of Siberia 2 promises to become the king of gas pipelines.
Power of Siberia 2 is a project for a trunk gas pipeline from Russia to China via Mongolia. Its capacity could reach up to 50 bln cubic meters of gas per year.
Following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to China in late August and early September 2025, Russia and China signed a legally binding memorandum on the construction of Power of Siberia 2 and the Soyuz Vostok transit gas pipeline through Mongolia.
Work on contracts for gas supplies via the Power of Siberia 2 pipeline is in its final stage, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said on the Vesti television channel during the visit of the Russian delegation to China. According to him, technical refinement of the documents is currently underway.
