On the 83rd day of Iran’s complete internet blackout, NetBlocks, the independent international network monitoring organization, wrote: “Free and open internet is essential for the protection of life, liberty, and public accountability.”

At the same time, some users who have managed to get online with great difficulty by buying expensive circumvention tools (VPNs) have been sharing stories about how difficult modern life has become without internet access.

Mina Kamran, a civil activist and co-founder of Roostatish, wrote on the issue:

“Roostatish doesn’t want ‘Pro Internet’ [tiered/privileged access].

The rural women who work with us don’t want it either.
