SEVEN people are now in police custody in connection with the disappearance of two-year-old Angelo Tobias Plaza as investigators widen the search for the missing toddler.Angelo was reported missing on the night of May 11 from his home in Goodwood, Tobago, triggering a major multi-agency search involving Tobago police, the Fire Service, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management, the Coast Guard, the Child Protection Unit, and the Homicide Bureau. In a statement yesterday, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) stated that three women and four men have been detained.Yesterday, investigators switched their attention to the Pig Farm Road district, as searches at the Mt St George dump and Dam Road area were unsuccessful.Personnel of the Cyber Unit have been tasked with analysing electronic devices seized as part of the investigations, the statement said.According to the TTPS, the investigation remains a multi-agency effort, comprised of officers of the Special Victims Department, the Tobago Division Gang Unit, the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, the Tobago Divisional Task Force, the Canine Unit, and the Criminal Records Office—with assistance from the Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) and the Hunters Search and Rescue Team. The TTPS renewed its appeal to the public for information that may assist in locating Angelo, and stated that the matter is a highly sensitive one in which it is conducting its work with the utmost professionalism, fairness, and respect for the constitutional rights of all parties involved.“We are equally mindful of our responsibility to communicate with the public in a measured and responsible manner, and will provide updates as information becomes available and can be appropriately disclosed,” the TTPS stated.Meanwhile, leader of the Hunters Search and Rescue Team Vallence Rambharat, told the Express yesterday there has been an increase in volunteers to assist in searches.“We had an increased strength coming from Trinidad to Tobago. We have an increase of three and if we add the two to Tobago we are up to eight in Tobago as fresh eyes, boots on the ground as we’ve been doing for the last few days.“We have been doing our own searches in undisclosed areas, and when the police needs us we would stop that search join them; and then when we are finished with the police we would resume our searches.“So, we do have a plan for where we agree to search, we will be out in the field until 9 p.m.,” Rambharat said.He said with day eight of searches ongoing yesterday, questions are being asked in the matter.“We believe that at this point in time in the eighth day, we are looking at recovery,” he said.Searching withwhatever leadsTEMA director Allan Stewart, who also spoke with the Express yesterday, said the recovery process for Angelo remains ongoing and they remain committed to the process.“It’s unfortunate that it has to reach to this, but this is what we are at this stage where we are searching places with whatever leads.“Whatever request is made of the TTPS, the teams are on the ground providing that. We are committed, our resources of the State, for example, UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) and all the necessary—radios, communications and all those little things that make their job a little bit easier on the field.“So, we ask Tobagonians and the wider country to bear with the process—it is one that is very difficult,” Stewart said.Minister of Works and Infrastructure Jearlean John also expressed hope that some level of closure would come in the disappearance of Angelo.Asked yesterday to comment on the matter, John described the case as heartbreaking. “It breaks my heart I don’t know the circumstances, but I want us to get to the bottom of this. I want us to get to the bottom of the circumstances, whatever it is.“We have to confront the truth, whatever the truth is. I don’t want to make any presumptive statements. I am saying every heart should be breaking for that poor child. I look forward to hearing what it is. It would not bring the child back...we wish it would,” John said.• Anyone with information can contact the Scarborough Police Station at 639-1200; or call 555, 800-TIPS; or in Tobago, 211.
