Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander yesterday said justice will be served and charges laid against those responsible for the death of two-year-old Angelo Tobias Plaza in Tobago.Nine days after the toddler was reported missing from his Goodwood coastal village home, police yesterday made a breakthrough in the case, as one of several people held confessed to investigators that the child had been killed—strangled and thrown into the sea.In response to questions from the Express yesterday, the minister said the nation was mourning Angelo and had been offering prayers and support to the family.“...The entire country has been following this case over the past few days and I want to commend the Tobago Division and all the investigating arms, including the Child Protection Unit who are involved,” said Alexander.“I also want to the thank the public for their assistance and cooperation. The people of Tobago who have come forward and lent support. There will be justice for little Angelo.”He confirmed information received yesterday indicated one of the people held by police had confessed to being involved in the child’s disappearance.Alexander said investigations were ongoing and a file is expected to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions. He said there was a need for parents to pay closer attention to the company they kept, and the people around their children.Alexander also encouraged members of the public to share information with authorities about children they know who may be in danger, instead of remaining silent and refusing to get involved. He said lives could be saved with a phone call, noting that communities needed to come together as they once did when villages and religious institutions served as an added layer of protection for vulnerable people. He pointed out that Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has implemented policies aimed at assisting children and vulnerable citizens, including through the Children’s Life Fund, which provides expanded care as well as social and financial assistance.Alexander said there were many avenues through which people can seek help, whether through the State apparatus, non-governmental organisations, or the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Child Protection Unit.
