At a time when tourism in Athens has been breaking records, Giorgos Kallimassias, CEO of Athens International Airport, is unveiling to Kathimerini AIA’s targeted strategy for its further development.

A central role in this process, he explains, is in the close cooperation with market players and especially with the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE), which constitutes a strategic interconnection of infrastructure with the tourism industry. This synergy now aims to transition from a simple increase in arrivals to targeted growth and the reduction of seasonality.

The €1.3 billion expansion program is combined with opening up to large, high-value overseas markets, such as North America, India and China, and achieving full energy autonomy with net zero carbon emissions.

With the airport’s total contribution reaching 3.8% of GDP, Kallimassias says AIA is not just a transport hub, but a key accelerator of the national economy, a guarantor of competitiveness. It is a critical national infrastructure, with resilient demand, strong international interconnectivity, a long-term, stable and clear regulatory framework, high profitability levels and an attractive dividend policy, a strong financial position and a funded expansion program.
