Two women and a child who allegedly traveled to Santorini to prey on tourists have been arrested for allegedly stealing bags and purses from visitors in the Aegean Sea resort island’s crowded streets, police said Monday.
A police statement said the suspects were foreign nationals aged 13, 40 and 57, and faced charges for aggravated theft.
Authorities have stepped up security and launched frequent police patrols in popular tourist destinations in the Aegean islands ahead of the summer season when millions of visitors are expected.
The statement said the suspects were arrested Saturday night in the town of Oia, one of Greece’s most popular tourist destinations situated above the island’s spectacular volcanic caldera.
“The suspects had gone to Santorini with the intention of carrying out thefts in locations with large concentrations of tourists,” the statement said.
