Police arrested five foreign nationals accused of smuggling undocumented migrants into the country in four separate incidents in the northern border regions of Evros and Rhodope.

In the first two cases Friday, officers stopped vehicles on national highways near Alexandroupoli, each carrying six undocumented migrants inland. Later the same day, a third suspect was detained in a rural area of Evros while allegedly transporting five migrants.

In a fourth incident early Saturday, border police in Evros arrested two suspects after stopping a car towing a trailer carrying six migrants. Police said the trailer bore forged license plates, while 15 counterfeit banknotes were found in the possession of one suspect.

All five suspects were arrested and vehicles, false plates and mobile phones were seized. The suspects are expected to be brought before prosecutors. Authorities said investigations are continuing.
