Five suspected members of migrant-smuggling rings have been arrested in northern Greece, including one on the outskirts of Thessaloniki, ferrying people west in cars from the country’s northeastern border with Turkey, authorities said Wednesday.
Police said the three men and two women were all foreign nationals. One lacked a driving license.
A police statement said one suspect was arrested early Wednesday in Kalohori, west of Thessaloniki, with two migrants in the boot of the car he was driving, following a road chase.
The other four arrests were made Wednesday and Tuesday close to the land border, which follows the course of the River Evros. Police said the suspects were carrying a total 20 migrants.
