The Chennai police have arrested a youth on charges of beating a 74-year-old man to death on a bus, after a dispute over route details.

The victim has been identified as Chandrasekaran, an electrician from Serappanancheri near Padappai in Tambaram. He had been waiting at the Tambaram MEPZ bus stop on Sunday (April 26, 2026) to take a bus to Vadapalani. He boarded a Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus (route no. 70G), heading from Guduvanchery to Vadapalani, and occupied a seat at the front.

Meanwhile, a youth, who had already boarded the bus at Tambaram, asked the conductor whether the bus would go to Koyambedu. The conductor said it would go only up to Vadapalani. The youth then looked at the LED display showing the route details and asked Chandrasekaran what was written on it. The elderly man reportedly said he did not know and asked him to check with the conductor.

This led to an argument between the two on the moving bus. The conductor intervened and asked Chandrasekaran to move to another seat. As he got up to shift seats, the youth allegedly grabbed him by the neck and repeatedly punched him on the face and chest.

Chandrasekaran collapsed inside the bus following the sudden assault. Shocked by the incident, the driver, conductor, and co-passengers stopped the bus near the Chromepet MIT flyover and rushed him in an auto to the Government Hospital, Chromepet, where doctors declared him brought dead.
