A 30-year-old man was beaten to death near Pallavan Salai on Thursday following a petty quarrel.

Police sources said the victim, Kalaichelvan, 30, a resident of Pallavan Salai, reportedly went in an autorickshaw with his friend in an inebriated state early on Thursday morning. It is alleged that Kalaichelvan urinated from the moving autorickshaw, and the urine fell on a woman who was passing by that way.

When the people accompanying the woman questioned him about it, an argument broke out, which soon escalated into a quarrel. During the altercation, some of the men who were with the woman allegedly assaulted Kalaichelvan. He collapsed unconscious after being beaten. His elder brother and relatives rushed him in an autorickshaw to the Government Stanley Hospital. However, doctors who examined him declared that he had already died.

On receiving information about the incident, the Esplanade police rushed to the spot and have begun an investigation. As the attackers fled the scene, the police are examining CCTV footage to identify and trace them.
