(ANSAmed) - ROMA, 21 APR - Premier Giorgia Meloni's government is working on a solution for its new security decree after President Sergio Mattarella reportedly told Cabinet Secretary Alfredo Mantovano on Monday that he could not sign off on a measure in it or a €615 incentive for the lawyers of migrants who choose to return to their countries of origin voluntarily.

"This won't do," the head of state reportedly told Mantovano about the provision, which has raised alarm among the opposition and raised criticism from some constitutional experts.

The decree must be converted into law by parliament by April 25, which is the Liberation Day national holiday here, or it will lapse, so there is little time to amend the package to fix the problem.

One possibility is that the cabinet could issue a new decree to repeal that specific measure.

The security bill also envisages, among other things, preventive detention of known troublemakers ahead of demonstrations, and it contains measures to beef up security and protect police.
