Premier Giorgia Meloni on Tuesday denied that her government had made a "mess" of its new security decree, saying issues raised by President Sergio Mattarella over a measure in it for a controversial €615 incentive for the lawyers of migrants who choose to return to their countries of origin voluntarily would be fixed via a separate decree.

She also denied reports that the government was set to scrap this provision completely.

"We're bringing together some technical considerations from the president's office and from lawyers regarding the security decree, which I don't consider a mess," Meloni told reporters during a visit to Milan's Salone del Mobile furniture-and-design fair.

"We'll transform those considerations into an ad hoc measure, because there was no time left before the decree was converted to amend the law.

"But the measure remains, because it's absolutely a common-sense measure, and, frankly, I'm surprised by what I've heard from the opposition in recent days".
