Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said a climate of tension is being created in Italy by anarchists and the far left after two suspected anarchists blew themselves up while handling a home-made bomb they were planning to use against targets including possibly defence giant Leonardo at a farmhouse on the outskirts of Rome Friday.
"There is a climate of tension that anarchists and far-left elements want to continue to create in our country," Tajani said on TG4 regarding the explosion of a bomb in Rome's Parco degli Acquedotti.
"We will see how the investigations progress, but the fact that two anarchists were handling a bomb on the eve of the (justice) referendum leaves us very perplexed.
"It worries us greatly because it confirms everything that was said during the most violent demonstrations that took place in many Italian cities," he added, urging everyone to remain "on high alert." Anarchists and anticapitalist leftists have staged violent anti-government protests in many cities in recent months including a rampage in Turin in which many police were hurt including one officer who suffered broken bones after being repeatedly hit with a hammer.
