Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on Wednesday blasted Italian judges fro the alleged leniency shown to violent protesters at Saturday's demo against the closure of a Turin anarchist squat after one charged with attacking a police officer was granted house arrest and two others accused of resisting arrest were let out with only an order to sign in with police.

"Askatasuna (the squat): first house arrest for the 22-year-old, arrested in flagrante delicto, accused of assaulting and robbing a police officer, now the obligation to sign in for the two Turin residents, arrested in flagrante delicto for resisting a public official," said the deputy premier and centre-right post -Berlusconi Forza Italia (FI) party leader.

"How can a citizen feel safe with this model of justice? How can law enforcement feel when faced with this debasement of their work? "I only hope that certain decisions are not made based on political sensitivity.

"We must uphold the law, yes, but always within a framework of respect for the law and the rule of law."
