Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Wednesday that he was extremely worried about the violent repression of protests in Iran and would hold a meeting to evaluate the options to protect the safety of Italian nationals living in Iran.
"Today I convened an operational meeting at the ministry to assess the situation and still see if we can also guarantee the security of our compatriots living in Tehran and other cities in Iran," Tajani said at the end of an event of the Carabinieri Officers School.
"We are deeply concerned about what is happening in Iran.
"We have also made it very clear to Tehran's ambassador in Rome that the repression must not be unprecedented violence.
"We do not want the death penalty (used on protestors).
